What Are You Doing Up Here?
Heidi wanted to feel grateful but there was something about
the gleam in his eye that made Heidi feel uneasy. Something stinketh and it’s
not the odor of slop lingering on his clothing.
“I like
you Heidi.” Heidi awakened in an instant and her eyes opened wide. Why is
Euwout sneaking around up here? He came closer and his grinning face seemed to
be leering in the flickering candle light. “You are sweet, and beautiful. “ Euwout set
the candle on a nearby trunk and reached out to fondle her.
Oh God,
what am I to do? I dare not scream for help. Euwout probably doesn’t even
understand what an evil he intends to do, and I can’t reason with him. Oh, God,
I trust in you. I beg you---from the bottom of my heart---rescue me! Please,
please God help me! She clutched the blanket to her chin but he was trying to
pull it away.
“Why you
so frightened? I make you happy.”
Finally
she found her voice: “No, Euwout, no. That is bad. What you want to do is
wrong. I am a married woman.”
“But
Jason no take care of you. I make you happy.”
“Jesus
help me!” Heidi pleaded.
Euwout
backed off looking puzzled. “You no like me?”
“Just
go, Euwout. Go. I am a married woman and what you are asking would cause me to
commit adultery. Adulterers and adulteresses must burn in hell forever and
forever. ”
“You
think that? How you know? “
“It is
in the Bible.”
Euwout
slouched away, shaking his heavy head. “That jade is too wise in the Scripture,”
he complained. “I have no chance with her.” Somehow Heidi sensed that Euwout would not be coming back to molest her, and rejoiced in God's care over her.
