Heidi’s cheeks went pale as she was lead back to her chamber. As soon as she was left alone she most earnestly entreated her loving Heavenly father to love pityingly upon His humble servant.
Heidi’s cheeks went pale as she was lead back to her chamber. As soon as she was left alone she most earnestly entreated her loving Heavenly father to love pityingly upon His humble servant.
“I know not how to either read or write,” she wept softly, while she knelt in the dirty straw. “There is so much I do not know about thee or thy ways. Pity me oh my Lord. I want to be faithful, but how can an ignorant wench like me answer those educated leaders?” Thus prayed the frail, humble servant of the Most High as the night wore on.
“Heidi.” The young woman looked up, wondering who would be speaking to her at this late hour. She saw no one.
Heidi continued with her praying. She was desperate to please God but knew not how to keep from failing Him when she was so untaught in the Word. If her knees or her back became stiff or sore, Heidi hardly noticed. Her devotion to God surpassed all earthly discomforts.
“Heidi!” Heidi looked up, then all around. Who is calling me? I can’t see anyone in this inky darkness. I wonder if Elizabeth is trying to get my attention. Is she not confined on the other side of this wall? She went over and tapped, but there was no response. Elizabeth must be sleeping sounding, or else she can’t hear me. Heidi knelt once more and continued communing with her beloved Heavenly Father. When the Voice came again, it was more urgent and commanding.
“Heidi! I tell thee, come out!” As Heidi rose to her feet she noticed that the door was open! She put on her hood and… Heidi escaped!
Where in the world am I to go? She fled to a nearby church. Surely that will be a sanctuary. But it must have been the hour for midnight mass because people were milling around. As she tried to mingle inconspicuously with the worshipers preparing to enter the building, she heard much low voiced, but animated conversation.
“Did you hear the news?”
“No what news?”
“The gates of the city have been barred!
“Oh whatever for? Is the Prince of --------on the rampage again?”
“The gates of the city have been barred!
“Oh whatever for? Is the Prince of --------on the rampage again?”
“No, no. It’s not anything that outlandish. An Anabaptist woman has escaped! From the prison! Some think it was sorcery!”
“Escaped? From the prison? How can that be?”
Heidi shrunk back against a shadowed wall, wondering nervously where she could hide. Surely the whole town will know by daybreak that I am on the loose
