Finally. They were on their way
back to Bethany. As the disciple John plodded on beside his beloved master many
thoughts roiled through his mind. Why did Jesus have such a pensive, almost dreamy
look on his face when he told us Lazarus was sleeping?
John’s brow furrowed. Why did he say Lazarus was sleeping in the first place? Sometimes I think he has such a strong connection with the- the- I AM that he hardly even knows that we are milling around him. Then he finally had to clarify himself to us dim-witted, earthy creatures.

John looked up from the dirt road
he had been staring at when Jesus’ pace quickened. John loved his master so
much that he frequently studied Jesus’ expression to learn more about him. Now
Jesus looked eager, almost intense, making John feel more bewildered than ever.
Why didn’t he go sooner if he is so desperate to get there now?
He noticed that the roads were
getting more crowded as they turned off towards Bethany. Are all these people
going to comfort Mary and Martha now that their brother has died? What a
dangerous time to be traveling! There could be assassins out to get him! Oh,
Jesus, Jesus will I ever understand your ways more fully? He wished his deep
love for this his most beloved friend, could protect the Christ from danger,
but…and John’s heart sank. Jesus seems to be pursuing a mission regardless of
the cost.
